So there's the first week and a half! This challenge has not been as hard as I initially thought, although it was certainly harder than previous years when I was sewing constantly. Of the last 11 days, 5 items were made in the last month and 6 were from back in the day, before my sewing break. I feel good about that ratio, and this month I'm definitely being challenged to sew more, which is good since I finally have a full-on sewing room that needs to be used!

Best laid plans amirite? It's pretty obvious that this blog has been sorely neglected of late but Me Mad May is going to change that! I hope...

I'm taking the pledge and jumping in! I'm borrowing Lauren's terminology on this one. I've haven't regularly sewn in a while and I've gained a some lbs since last time I did sew regularly so I'm hoping to wear one item per day and I'm letting myself repeat items, but not entire outfits. Here it goes!

I, Forrest of Presserfoot Propaganda, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’14. I endeavor to wear at least one handmade garment each day for the duration of May 2014, with no 100% outfit repeats.’

I'll be posting daily on my Instagram "forrestnicole" and probably doing a weekly round-up on this blog. See you soon!Forresthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17117952235453226185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7867641744396199683.post-3950154011212419182013-08-19T14:37:00.000-05:002013-08-19T14:37:23.550-05:00Named PatternsDid you see this post about the new pattern company Named on Rachel's blog?
I'm a lover of maxi dresses and I think this could be a good option for fall. It looks a little dressy but I think with flats it could be casual enough for dinner with the husband or a not-too fancy party. I probably wouldn't wear it to Target or anything, but I could see it working for dinner out with friends.

Anyway, I'm wondering if I could Frankenstein it with the top of a pattern like Simplicity 1872,

I actually have a McCalls pattern that's similar in some ways to the Asos dress but it's made for knits and sort of looks a beach cover up, so I'm thinking the structure of the Anna skirt is needed to make this look more like a dress I would wear over a real bra with underwire instead of a bikini top.

But now for the real issue. The dress from Asos is $54, which isn't cheap but also isn't a horrible price considering the amount of fabric the dress uses. I already own the Simplicity pattern but I'd have to buy the Anna pattern (about $26) and fabric (I would imagine I would need 3 to 4 yards and I don't have enough of anything appropriate in my stash). Since this is just a fun dress to wear to dinner I probably wouldn't spend tons on the fabric, but even at 4-5 dollars a yard the Asos dress is probably a better deal. I know I would have fun making it but I have a million other projects I would have fun making too so entertainment is not my top priority. Also, I know the dress I made would probably be a little better quality, but since this isn't something that I'd wear all the time (like a pair of jeans or a coat) I'm not super concerned about it lasting forever. Finally, considering the dress is not supposed to be super tight, I don't think I would have a problem with fitting if I ordered it. So all of my normal reasons for sewing (fit, quality, price) are not as relevant as they usually are.

It's funny how much of a dilemma something like this is to me now. Before I knew how to sew I would have just ordered it, no questions asked. Now I almost feel like its a moral issue! So my question is, what would you do? Do you make things when you know you could buy them cheaper and the fit and quality would probably be similar?

My buying vs. sewing rules are:
I buy things that seem boring to make and I can buy cheaply (like white v-neck tshirts) or that I couldn't replicate at home (like if they are made of some incredible fabric and I don't think I could find something similar).

What are your rules? And if someone just wants to tell me to buy and and get over my sewer's guilt, that's ok too :)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I'm not sure if anyone has missed me in my 5 month abscence. Some of you may never find me again (particularly with the demise of Google Reader), but I am officially back in the sewing habit. Or will be in a few days once my sewing room is complete! I have missed you and sewing more than I can say but getting married, buying and renovating a house and just generally living have gotten in the way recently. I've been keeping up with my favorite sewing blogs and buying most of the new independent patterns that have come out in the last few months (keep your eyes out for a <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Saltspring<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">, a <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Hawthorn<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">, some <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Lakeside PJs<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> and a few <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Thread<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Theory<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> pieces for the husband coming soon!) so I'm ready to go as soon as we finish installing new lights and I unpack all my sewing gear. Also, I'm starting a new blog called <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Summer of the Butterflies<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> to record the progress as we renovate our house. This blog has helped so much to encourage me to sew and keep a record of what I've done, so I figure I should do the same thing with my house! I'll be back soon to share what happened with my wedding dress, since <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">last you heard from me I was in a bit of a crisis<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">. I Need Your Help!I'm officially putting out the SOS for help on my wedding dress.

A little over a month ago I wrote this post, which shared some of the inspiration for the dress and since then I've been MIA on the blog front. I promise I haven't forgotten about you my dears but I've been in the throws of working on the dress, moving everything in our house to replace all the carpet, moving everything back, and then finding a gorgeous new house that we're closing on in exactly one month. I'm in love. Also I'll have a huge attic sewing room. CAN'T WAIT to tell you more about that, but first I need some help...

So where we last left off I was pondering draping options for the bodice of my dress. I finally decided on a swoopy pleat thing (obviously an official term) like the dress below that I tried on last summer. I saw this tutorial on Burdastyle that seemed pretty do-able so that's the road I started down.

I first made a muslin of the Bombshell Dress from Gertie's Craftsy course with measurements to fit the crazy corset thing from the bridal shop that I'll be wearing under the dress. Below is a picture of how the muslin turned out. After I made a few fitting adjustments I remade the bodice, with underlining for structure, out of a mid weight cotton but I didn't sew the side seams together so I could drape the front and two back pieces separately.

This is the lace I'm using for the overlay, which I'm totally in love with and was cheap from JoAnns. (because I am not the girl who needs to spend a million dollars on fabric for a dress I'm wearing once) The one downside is that it's a little stiff, which might be the problem.

Once the bodice base (not sure that's the right word) was done I pinned it to my dress form and started draping. This is what it looked like when I finished. I love the way it looks on the dress form, but when I got down to actually sewing all of those pleats on to the bodice the trouble began. Because the fabric is a little stiff it doesn't hold the pleats without tacking them down every few inches. (hence all the pins on the dress form to hold them in place) I basically was doing a running stitch down every pleat with a stitch every inch or so. I got about half way through the process and I realized that I didn't like the way it was turning out. All the pleats looked really flat and smushed and not as

3-D and swoopy as they did on the dress form. I don't have a picture of how this looks because in a moment of stress and desperation I pulled the whole thing apart.

In the midst of this, the March BurdaStyle came in the mail and included this darling wedding dress which is similar in idea to what I was going for in that it's a strapless, sweetheart bodice with pleating. However, although you can't see it in the pictures, (here's a link to the line drawing so you can see it better) this bodice consists of two long panels that are cut on the bias and gathered on each side and sewn together, resulting in a seam down the middle of the bodice and no swoopy effect like my first version. The Burda dress has a different set up for the bodice underneath but I think I could make it work with the bodice I already have so I don't have to re-fit. I haven't pulled the trigger on it because I still like the way the original draping looked on the dress form and I just can't decide if the fabric will do any better with this plan. Plus, because this pattern is cut on the bias, I'll be using up a lot of the fabric I have left, which will limit my options should it not work out.

So I guess the question is, is there some secret to draping that I'm missing? Is there a way to make the pleats pretty and not flat looking? Or should I give up and use the Burda bodice? I've already traced and cut out the pieces, which is the most daunting part of using BurdaStyle patterns in my opinion, so it would be pretty fast to put the bodice together.

HELP! And also, thank you in advance for your sage advice. Y'all are the best :)Forresthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17117952235453226185noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7867641744396199683.post-12940312895703529512013-01-18T23:08:00.004-06:002013-01-18T23:10:50.997-06:00Wedding Dress: The InspirationI spent the weekend before last beginning the work on my wedding dress and I'll continue to work on it this weekend, so I thought I start to show you what's going on. This post will be about my inspiration for my dress and the next few posts will show you "the plan" and the beginnings of the process.

From the beginning I knew I wanted a short dress for several reasons.

One, the style of the wedding will be pretty casual and the reception will be outdoors in hot Texas so I knew a ballgown wouldn't really work.

Two, I'm a pretty simple girl who doesn't wear a lot of jewelry or like a lot of embellishments or accessories, etc and because I was planning on making the dress myself, I didn't want to attempt something super elaborate with a bustle or detailed beading or anything that would be really complicated and not feel like me anyway.

PS The guiding principle of all my wedding planning thus far has been "does it feel like me?" Is this a slightly fancier, white version of a dress I would wear to a party? Is this the kind of food I would serve if I was having people over for dinner? Does this look similar to the style my house is decorated in? etc. It makes trimming down all the options a lot easier!

Three, the fiance and I love to dance and we would both be annoyed by tripping over a long dress.

Four, I love shoes and I bought fabulous ones for the wedding and I don't want to hide them under a huge skirt.

So it's a short dress for me, and a strapless one. (again because of the heat factor)
The only thing I'm still slightly undecided about is the drape of the bodice. I'm planning on using a bodice pattern with a sweetheart neckline and draping lace over it (more on the lace in my next post), but I'm not sure how exactly I want it to look. Here are some ideas...
So that's the inspiration! We'll see how it works out!

My sewing room is officially unpacked and I actually started sewing a dress Tuesday night, the first thing I had worked on in at least 2 months. I can't believe I went that long without working on a sewing project, it had been so long that I was going through serious withdrawls. Anyway, I'm back in the saddle and planning my sewing goals for this year. Without further ado, here are my 5 sewing goals for 2013.

1. Make my wedding dress.

I'm actually starting this project tomorrow! I'm really excited to make my dress and so far I really don't have any anxiety about it, although anytime I tell someone I'm making my dress they act like I've completely lost my mind. These are some inspiration pictures but I'm planning a full post to explain what look I'm going for and get everyone's advice/approval on the methods I'm planning on using.

2. Try some new independent pattern companies.

Specifically Papercut and Deer and Doe. I helped proofread the English version of one of Deer and Does patterns, so now I'm even more excited to try them! Below are the ones I want to order first.

3. Actually make the jackets/coats I was planning to in 2012.

I had grand plans of making the Lady Grey, the Anise and Gertie's Starlet Suit Jacket last fall. I even bought all the shell materials, lining, interfacings and tailoring supplies but between switching jobs, moving and general laziness I never got around to it. I'm obsessed with learning to hand tailor so I want to start these jackets right now, even though by the time I finish one jacket it will probably be so hot in Texas I'll barely want to wear anything more than a bathing suit.

4. Expand my pants wardrobe.

I've made 2 versions of the Clover pants and I have one more cut out but I'd like try out a few other pants patterns this year. First, I'm in love with Sunni's coral Burda pants! I've had that pattern for a while and I've always wanted to attempt it so her version has definitely motivated me to pull it out. Also, I'd love to make a pair of Juniper trousers in a pretty grey linen I could wear in the spring and fall.

5. Make something with leather.

I'm really excited about this goal because I just found out (thanks to my mom and dad) that the best leather store in town is just a few blocks from my house! I visited it for the first time the other day and bought 2 gorgeous skeins that I can't wait to work with. I'm thinking something simple initially, like this clutch, then hopefully I can build up my skills to something more intricate!

I've spent the last few days reading everyone else's resolutions and I must say, I think 2013 is going to be a great year for sewing!

I've been practicing this thought a lot lately. Perhaps to my detriment...

Sewing machine acting up? Give up and have a margarita.
House/sewing area dirty? Give up and have a margarita.
Take a bunch of pictures of a bunch of things you've made for your blog and then realize they all turned out fuzzy? Give up and have a margarita.
Feel guilty about not blogging for forever? Give up and have a margarita.

So basically, sorry I've been a big jerk and have ignored my blog for a while. I've been busy drinking margaritas. And sometimes red wine. And sometimes home brew beer. (yes, we brewed our own beer using this kit! it's awesome!)

Also, it's going to get worse before it gets better. The fiance and I finally decided to move in together, so I'm spending the next 1.5 weeks packing and moving and not sewing. Then a trip to Dallas that will hopefully include fabric shopping. Then unpacking and organizing my new sewing room! Then maybe I'll get over my laziness and retake all the pictures I mentioned above? The point is, give me a few more weeks and then I'll hopefully have oodles to show you! In the meantime, I'm still reading all your blogs and drooling over their greatness. Definitely inspiring me to pack faster so I can get back to sewing soon!

I'm mostly just a lazy girl who occasionally likes to have people appreciate her sewing (or at least know that she made what she's wearing), since no one I see regularly really cares.

So rather than show you my fall sewing plans in some beautiful way (like those ladies who take the line drawing from a pattern and add in the fabric in photo shop so you can see what the piece will actually look like), I just dumped the fabric on the floor of my living room last night and took pictures with my iPhone. Also, the lighting is terrible. I'm amazed you people put up with me!

So this (with the addition of these two coats) is my fall sewing plan. Or maybe it's more like a wish list. There's a lot of projects and I'm pretty sure I won't complete them all, but this gives me plenty of options depending on my sewing mood (aka: do I want to sew something difficult or easy, a dress or a top or a skirt or a pair of pants, do I want to make something to wear to this weekend, etc.).

First up are PJ's. I've actually already made pants (view F) out of all three of these fabrics from Joann's,

but 2 of them were close to the end of the bolt so I got extra fabric and I think I'll make the short sleeve top (view A) from the same pattern with the extra fabric.

with a red and black polka dot lining. (not sure you can tell there are polka dots on that fabric, but there are). Both of these outer fabrics are medium weight suiting. I know that the suggestion for the pattern is for wool but it's not often cold enough here for too many wool jackets.

Medium weights are better for South Texas.

These will also become jackets. A light grey blazer, view A (with enough fabric left over for maybe a pencil skirt) and something else with the black and white stripe.

and I'm still not sure about the fabric on the far right. It's from my New York fabric buying binge and I've never been sure what to do with it...

Next up are dresses. This pretty teal will be a Nicola wrap dress, the grey plaid a simple pullover dress,

These 2 will be pants. The plaid will be these Vogue trousers and the hot pink corduroy (this stuff is BRIGHT PINK in real life) will be another pair of Clovers.

Finally, these might end up as some combination of suiting pieces. They're all pretty large pieces, so I think I can get a few garments out of each. The left piece might be a dress and maybe a pencil skirt. The grey linen in the middle might be a pair of wide legged pants with a matching vest and the black wool on the right will probably be the Starlet Suit Jacket from Gertie's Craftsy course, (I can't find the link to this class on the main website! wonder if it's no longer available?) with a pencil skirt rather than the one from the course...

I would like to add this last piece of fabric to the project list, but I'm not sure what to do with it. It's a really loose weave knit, that has pleats ironed into it. It's pretty see-through, so it would have to be lined if it was going to be a dress or something. I bought this from Joanns a few months ago. Anybody buy the same fabric or have any ideas?

So that's my fall/winter sewing plan. I'm sure it will change, things will be added and subtracted, but it's definitely enough to keep me busy! The cutting out starts this weekend...

Now I have 4 or 5 "fall-ish" dresses I need to photograph and post. Yikes.

This is take 2 of Simplicity's 2250, yet another Cynthia Rowley pattern! I do love my Cynthia Rowley! I've already made this dress once, but something always felt a little off about that version of the dress. I think it had to do mainly with my fabric choice and the length. I used a really light weight broadcloth for my first dress and it always felt a little too wispy and young. Plus the bodice never looked totally right to me because the fabric didn't press well. I ended up giving the dress to my sister though, so I won't talk to much trash about it ;) Hi Allie!

This time I used a heavier weight teal cotton, which pressed much better and even though it might not look like it, the hem is a little longer. Those 2 things have made all the difference, this time around I really love this dress! (PS this has a weird pleated skirt like the dress in my last post. Seriously, check out the line drawings. Not normal...)
I think I look like a child in this dress.

This is the dress I was originally going for(on the right), from the Spring/Summer Clarks advertisements...

Source: thestyleconfessions.com via Forrest on Pinterest

And here's what happened...

I used a white with pink polka dot quilting cotton I thrifted a few months back. I also used Simplicity 1873, a Cynthia Rowley pattern. Here's the good news. It fits really well in the bust and I think I did a pretty good job making it, if I do say so myself. It's fully lined with white cotton and I think that, combined with the thickness of the outer fabric and the pleated skirt, is my one problem with the construction. The skirt feels a little heavy and I think the pleats hang a little funny because of the weight. I probably should have just gathered the skirt, instead of using the typical, weird Cynthia Rowley pleated skirt. (is this just me? I feel like every dress I make with her patterns has a weird pleated skirt, either asymmetrical pleats, or just a lot of them. It's never just a gathered or simply pleated skirt. I'm not really complaining though, I usually think they're cute, just not with this fabric)

So, when I comes to the pattern, I will most likely be using it again. In fact I think I already have some fabric in mind for a fall version. I like the shape and I think it fits well. But with this specific dress, something (maybe the polka dots?) makes me look like a little girl. It just feels sort of juvenile, so I haven't actually worn it yet. I was hoping it would be a great work dress but, I'm already pretty young for my field and my position so I usually try to dress a bit older and I feel like this has the opposite effect. I can't figure out why it looks so cute in the advertisement but I don't love it in real life...

I contemplated getting the Juniper pants but I have a million pants pattern and I've only made 2 pairs so far, both using the same pattern, so I reigned myself in...

Anyway, I'm already brainstorming what fabric to use. Maybe I'll start it this rainy weekend. I feel like Fall is going to be the season of the jacket in my sewing room...

A million years (or 1.5 weeks) have lapsed since I showed you my gingham Hazel that I wore to the rehearsal dinner of my fiance's cousins wedding. (is that confusing?) I've been hesitating on posting the next few dresses because the pictures are so blurry but I figured I would probably never get around to re-taking them, so maybe blurry is better than nothing? Anyway, now I'm finally showing you the dress I wore to the wedding and it's take 2 (here's my first attempt) of the Bombshell dress from Gertie's Craftsy class...

The fabric is a medium weight quilting cotton I picked up from a quilting store outside of Fort Worth last year. It had Bombshell written all over, especially since I used the sarong skirt from the pattern. It's a little kitschy maybe but I love it. (PS you can see the fabric better in the close up pictures at the end of this post. damn the blurriness of these pictures!)

The only modification I made was to add about an inch to the top of the cup so it covered a little more. (that's for you mom!) To add the extra inch I traced the top cup pattern piece on a plain sheet, marked one inch from the highest point of the cup and drew a curved line to connect that point to the edges of the pattern piece that connected to the side bodice and center bodice pieces. (does that make sense?) The coverage was a lot more appropriate for a family wedding than the first bombshell I made. Also, I noticed that my hand stitching and general construction of the dress improved a lot the second time. Obviously that had to do mostly with the fact that I had made the dress before, but I also think this fabric helped...

I made this dress to wear to a "western" themed rehearsal dinner for the fiance's cousin in mid-July and I'm just now blogging about it! Yikes y'all.

Anyway, the invitation said western so I immediately thought of this piece of pink gingham quilting cotton that's been hanging around in my stash for a hot minute. It's medium weight and a little stretchy so I thought it would work well with the Hazel pattern. Plus I think I saw someone else make it in gingham. Maybe? Can't remember...

As always with Colette patterns, the dress went together really easily, I even was able to use my favorite french seams on the bodice pieces (although it wasn't easy, see picture below). I'm really appreciating the fact that my skills have finally caught up with my need to sew things really quickly (aka my ADD). I'm able to turn out garments that are finished really nicely in SO much less time than it used to take me! I guess practice does make perfect(ish)!

So here's my complaint. You knew I'd have one right? I can't remember what size I cut but I know it was a size smaller than my measurements said it should have been. I checked the finished measurements and thought it would fit snug-ish but with enough ease in the bust and hips for comfort. I even used less of a seam allowance at the waist to make sure I could breath easily. Turns out, I should have listened to Sarai and gone with the size she recommended. This sucker is tight! And a little shorter than I like too. I felt slightly hoochy hanging out with the future in-laws in this dress. Luckily they've known me long enough to know that I'm not too trampy...

Here are a few detail shots that are way better quality than the full body shots. I seriously have to figure out what's going on with my camera...
So today starts the Parade of Dresses that will be taking over my blog in the next week or so in order to catch y'all up on the sewing I've done over the past month!

The first dress up is the ever popular Darling Ranges Dress by Megan Nielsen. (Please forgive the crummy pictures)

I made my version sleeveless out of a thin, poly navy and white polka dot material (from an estate sale) that I'm pretty sure was supposed to be lining fabric but I couldn't resist the print. The material was a NIGHTMARE to worked with! It pulled and picked and the buttonholes are the worst things I've ever done in my life but I've still worn the dress probably 6 times in one month, so obviously I like it anyway.

I cut out 2 more of this dress in more appropriate, less miserable fabrics that I think we'll be perfect for fall!

All in all, as everyone knows it's a great pattern and I can't wait to make more!

In other news, did you see Gertie' new line of patterns for Butterick? I just got the email from Amazon saying my copy of Gertie's New Book For Better Sewing shipped today, and then I check Google Reader and now there's even more Gertie goodness hitting my mailbox soon! Congratulations to her, what an accomplishment!

I've been sewing and cutting and buying fabric and such but somehow the blogging part has been left behind. So in the next few days I'll be photographing my latest projects and writing posts and hopefully by next week I'll be back to posting regularly, but a girls gotta take a summer vacay sometimes right?

Anyway, despite my lack of blogging lately, I couldn't help but post this the minute I saw it. Victory Patterns has released their new collection! It's called the Niagra Collection and it's fabulous!

Aren't they lovely? The Nicola is my favorite (in part due to the fact that my middle name is Nicole), but the Simone is a close second. They're coming home with me today! Once again, the patterns from Victory are beautiful and super unique to the pattern world. It's so nice to see unusual silhouettes and such on-trend styles! As always, lovely job Victory Patterns! Can't wait to see what the sewing world does with these patterns!

I don't know why but I scoured Etsy forever looking for just the right fabric. This was not necessarily it, but it is cute, and this end of bolt piece was really cheap, so I went with it...

PS It's Michael Miller's Spa Scallop Stripe.

I originally thought I wanted a more a-line shape but there wasn't much fabric (like maybe 3/4 of a yard), so I went with a simple pencil skirt pattern with facings, New Look 6107. This is actually one of two pieces I've made recently from this pattern. The second is coming up soon.

I'm pretty pleased with this pattern overall. It fits well, better than some other pencil skirt patterns I've used in the past and it's obviously very easy to put together. The one problem with this skirt is revealed below. My stripes don't match in the back! Or rather, they do at the top (as seen in the picture below the one below), but then they pass the zipper and get a little wonky. It's especially disappointing because this is the only part of the skirt where I even tried to match stripes! I didn't have enough fabric to match the sides, so I lined up the stripes, but the colors don't match up.

I can't remember now if the waistband is cut sideways in the pattern or if I just did that as a design element... Either way, I think it looks pretty cool. You can also see my polka dot facing, proving that I barely made it with the amount of fabric I had...
Turning 25 on the 25th. I think that deserves a new sewing machine right?Forresthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17117952235453226185noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7867641744396199683.post-4528093425089396112012-07-18T10:49:00.000-05:002012-07-18T10:49:00.077-05:00Vintage Sheet ProjectFound this recently through icandy homemade. It's from June of last year so I'm a little behind, but I think this dress might make an appearance a few times this summer in my sewing room. The lovely lady who created the dress and is modeling it here is Kayla from Freckles in April. This is literally 2 long skinny rectangles sewn together with a space for the neck, then folded over and sewn up the sides. So easy! And I love that she uses a vintage sheet since I have a few in fabric stash... Here's the tutorial. Now go make one for yourself!

I've been wanting to make shorts lately because honestly every time I see a pair of shorts in a store they look like underwear. Seriously, do people wear shorts that short? Or am I just 100 years old? Anyway, I thought the Iris pattern from Colette looked great because the shorts are not too fitted, not too short, and have a pretty simple style (aka it wouldn't take me a year to make them).

These things are so quick and easy to sew it's crazy. I used a stretch black cotton leftover from my Clover muslin and I seriously think I got these done in about 2 hours. Love patterns like that! Unfortunately, because they're black and I'm back lit in these pictures it's impossible to see any detail but I'm assuming you can tell that they fit pretty well. I cut a size 6 (I think... maybe it was a 4) and didn't make any modifications.

Yay for summer and shorts that don't show my lady parts!
Forresthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17117952235453226185noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7867641744396199683.post-9316631307566183902012-07-05T17:01:00.002-05:002012-07-05T17:01:47.615-05:00What I'm Sewing This Winter...I'm preparing for a social hibernation this fall which largely has to do with 2 estate sales I visited last weekend. The first I planned. I'm a frequent visitor to estatesales.net, always searching for a sale with sewing related paraphernalia. Like these 2 incredible ones last year... As much as I love my new job, it is a bummer to work Friday afternoons, which used to be my estate sale time. Now I worry that by the time I get there on Saturday morning, most of the good stuff is gone. Like at the first sale, I got a bunch of great stuff, but how much more great stuff was there on Thursday when they opened?

Anyway, the main score at the first estate sale was the piece of teal wool on the left side of the picture. You see, I've been dreaming of making a teal Lady Grey coat for at least a year but every time I think about buying the wool for it I stop myself. I've never seen it for below $15 a yard and I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger, especially since the pattern requires over 4 yards. I think this piece is around 4 1/4 and I got it for $1.50. AMAZING!!!! I also picked up a few lining fabrics and light cottons from this sale, one of which is a raspberry color that I think I'll use to line this coat. I'm planning on following Gertie's Lady Grey sew-a-long, complete with pad stitching and all!

The second estate sale I happened upon while driving home from the first. There I found several large pieces of a light grayish/blueish suede leather above. I've been wanting to make a motorcycle style jacket for awhile, like the one below but much more fitted and shorter, and I think this will be great material for it. I already have Simplicity 2056 and it will work pretty well for my purposes, unless I can find something better in the meantime.

I'm really excited to work on these projects, because up until now, the Minoru is the only outerwear piece I've made. Plus I'll really have an opportunity to learn some new techniques, traditional hand tailoring and working with leather, in the process. I'm hoping to start the Lady Grey in late September, so it will be ready when it gets cold in late November and the leather jacket in December because I think it will make a nice transitional piece in spring. Basically this means I won't be getting out much this fall/winter. I can't imagine that these jackets will be anything less than a TON of work, but it will be totally worth it...

Last but not least, I forgot to show you the gorgeous fabric I bought when I was out of town for the wedding last weekend! Such pretty colors right? Keep your eyes peeled, I'm cutting these up this weekend so hopefully they'll become dresses soon!
