The Incredible Expanding Pink Clovers

Warning. The following pictures contain:

a. greasy mullet hair
b. a too tight, old, grimey white t-shirt
c. visible bra lines
d. my midriff
e. incredible expanding pants

Still here? You're brave. Ok, let's disuss my pink clovers. Ironically, I was planning on posting these pants today anyway, but was validated when I saw this post by Mika of Savory Stitches. So here's the deal. My pants are growing. Just like Mika's. I used exactly the same pattern as my black clovers, along with some pink stretch corduroy from Gorgeous Fabrics and they are stretching out like crazy! Even after washing them in hot water and sticking them in the dryer!

They start out sort of normal fitting in the morning, then they become this mess by lunch...




I'm sorry you have to see this. It's for scientific purposes only...
If only this problem was due to weight loss. I mean, this could seriously be in an ad for some Kardashian-promoted diet pill.
 
Please ignore my dying basil plant in the background. Why do I insist on trying to grow plants when my aparment is a dark cave?
So the plan for now is, like Mika, to take apart the waistband and take them in on the outside leg seams until they fit correctly again. I really don't wan't to take them apart entirely, and I certainly don't want to deal with the inseam or crotch seam. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this craziness? Or is this basically an excuse for me to eat ice cream until I grow into them?

Pants! That fit! Amazing!

So I finished my Clovers! Hooray! And they fit, which is the greatest miracle of all!

Ignore my grim expression, I actually love these pants...

Those wrinkles around my crotch are definitely from sitting at my desk all day and not from fitting problems.
Thank goodness!


I realized while editing these pictures that this was a terrible picture to demonstrate fit because I'm standing funny. Trust me though, they fit like a glove...
 Here are my overall observations:

-I'm crazy lucky that these didn't need much adjusting. The first muslin I made was just overall too big, but luckily I was able to pinch out the excess fabric rather than do any major fitting adjustments. That kind of stuff hurts my brain...

-Sallie Oh is a red hot genius and I'm so thankful to her for the step-by-step tutorial to add pockets and a fly to these pants. It was super clear and definitely not as hard as I thought it would be.

-Black pants are hard to photograph.

-These are the kind of thing that you love more the more you wear them. I was happy to wear them in the morning but by about 3:00pm on Monday I was totally in love with these pants and was deciding which color to make next. It was probably because they loosen up a little as the day goes on...


On to the close-ups:

(PS Oh my gosh, please ignore the horrible wrinkles/cat hair on these pants. So embarrassing... I don't go out of the house looking like this, promise)

Here's the main 2 problems with these pants. First, the waistband is kind of funky, and crease-y. I'm pretty sure it has to do with combining the stretch outer fabric with the interfaced non-stretch lining. Secondly, I did something to screw up the fly. There's not enough of a flap to cover the zipper and I'm not exactly sure why, however I am sure it has to do with me being an airhead and paying more attention to season 1 of Ally McBeal than to my pants. Luckily it's not too noticeable because it's black and I wear long shirts and also, if you do notice it, stop looking at my crotch please!

Inside back pockets. I need to come up with some sort of finishing besides pinking for these. Maybe bias binding?


So in conclusion, these are the greatest, most complicated, most satisfying things I've ever made and you'll will be seeing a lot more of them!

Clover Pants Muslin

aka, the time I showed an awkward picture of my butt to the world...
So, the good news is these are not as bad as I thought they would be. I read horror stories of other blogger's struggles to fit their Clovers, so I was relieved that these fit as well as they do. I made them with a black pointe from Fabricmart. I bought 6 yards so that I could use it for the muslin and the final pair. I had hoped to add the modifications from Sallie Oh's fabulous Clovers but I think this material is too thin for pockets and a fly zip, so I'm planning to finish out this pair as is, then make another with the pocket and fly modifications and thicker fabric.

Here's the front. The main problem I see is the baggy crotch. I also feel like it sits a little high on my waist (you can't really tell from the picture but it feels off) and there's obviously a lot of extra fabric in the shin-area.


The back actually fits pretty well, which is good, considering how much it hurt my brain to think about how to alter that area. Again, there's way too much fabric in the legs, which shouldn't be too hard to fix, but I'm not sure what to do about the diagonal lines around my hips... Any ideas?


So this is my solution so far for the front. I folded the waistband down about 1.5 inches, which makes it sit a lot better and fixes some of the bagginess. I need to inspect the Colette pants fitting cheat sheet to confirm how to transfer this alteration to the pattern (this is a crotch length alteration right?), and to figure out how to get rid of the rest of the bagginess. I also folded up the hem a few inches to approximate where I want them to hit on my legs. Looks so much better than the first picture doesn't it?


Hopefully the fixes needed for these pants will be as simple as they seem. Is there anything weird y'all see that I might be missing?
